UV Flexo Printing Gravure Challenge

As we all know, the country has increasingly stricter standards for the emission of volatile organic pollutants (VOCs). More than a dozen provinces and cities have already issued corresponding local regulations. Companies engaged in solvent-based intaglio printing are the major VOCs emitters in the printing industry, and they are also the focus of inspections by environmental protection and security inspection agencies. Gravure printing companies are also actively taking various countermeasures, such as adding solvent recovery systems, adding solvent incineration systems, switching to single-solvent gravure inks, changing to water-based gravure inks, and converting to UV gravure inks. At the same time, companies adopting other printing methods are also gearing up to compete with solvent-based gravure printing companies and gain a slice of the existing market. Their printing methods include water-based flexo printing and UV-LED soft printing. India, UV-LED web offset and so on. This article will demonstrate how UV flexo instigates the gravure printing market through a comparative analysis of UV flexographic and gravure printing technologies.

The main characteristics of gravure and flexo

The main features of gravure printing are the thick ink layer, saturated ink, and high production speed, and the ink system is a short ink path (as shown in Figure 1).

Flexo printing is a letterpress printing, which takes into account the transfer of large amounts of ink. At the same time, it divides the gravure printing plate function into anilox rollers to control the ink volume transfer, and the flexographic printing plate is responsible for the output of plate printing patterns (as shown in Figure 2). ).

Comparing the curing methods of solvent-based gravure inks and UV flexo inks

The solvent-based gravure ink is dried by evaporation (evaporation), absorption, and partial cross-linking, as shown in FIG. 3 . The UV flexo ink is cured by UV energy, and no ink component volatilizes, ie, 100% cures on the substrate surface. In UV flexo ink formulations, low-molecular-weight viscosity-adjusting monomers contain unsaturated double bonds and participate in curing reactions, so they are also called reactive diluents, as shown in Figure 4.
